National Art & Design Saturday Club at Falmouth University, 2012-2014

As part of my role within the Outreach team I established the National Art & Design Saturday Club at Falmouth. The Club is a national initiative set-up by the Sorrell Foundation that offers young people aged 14-16 the unique opportunity to study art and design their local university for free.

I kick started the programme of Saturday morning classes at Falmouth, and was responsible for the ongoing coordination of the Club. I recruited approximately 25 Club members per year from across Cornwall making use of working relationships I have developed with school teachers. Material disciplines included; portraiture, painting, ceramics, glass, product design, print, illustration, photography, animation and sculpture to name just a few.

Now in its sixth year, the Saturday Club runs in 41 locations across the UK. As well as more than 100 hours of specialist tuition, young people also benefit from visits to museums and galleries, Masterclasses from leading art and design practitioners and an exhibition of their work in London’s Somerset House.

The Saturday Club nurtures talent, builds confidence and raises aspirations. It helps young people gain qualifications and gives them an insight into studying at college or university and an understanding of careers in the creative industries.
